Keep the Humor

It's been a week since Shelly's birthday bash. We are managing to keep her pain under control so that's good although she's tired and sleeps a lot. Still, she does check her email and does check the blog for comments as well.

A little story about Shelly's teasing sense of humor:

Two years ago, around Valentine's Day, Shelly had to have gamma knife radiation for the lesions that showed up in her brain. This required having a metal "halo" fixed to her head by screwing it into the skull - local anesthetic was used but it still hurt and it wasn't pleasant.

A counselor came to talk with Shelly the other day and mentioned that Valentine's Day was coming soon.

Shelly said, in her very soft whisper of a voice, "Don't tell me that. That's when I got screwed".

The young lady nearly fell over.

We quickly explained the gamma knife halo and she rapidly recovered although she hasn't returned. :-)

Please feel free to share your stories, either in a comment or an email to me which I can post in the next entry.

Thanks.

Dear Shelly, You are too too funny!! Can I borrow that line!? It will never be as good as your using it but I can think of lots of other meanings that might produce at least a small laugh. I see your sharp mind at work here and am glad that your situation at least allows you the freedom to say what comes to mind! Good for you! I'm glad to know that you are reading the blog and email. I wasn't sure but since I write mostly for YOU, I'll just keep writing more. I'm glad that you are mostly comfortable and hope your days are peaceful. Much love to you sweetie, Alice

Little can complete with the "I got screwed" story, even if each of us were to describe how and when we got metaphorically screwed. I'll try to think of some of my funny stories but none come to mind. In fact, none were funny, at the time or now! But,I'll find some other amusing stories.

The birthday photos are delicious. Thank you for the cake which is safely in Alice's freezer. I'll get to taste it and look at the photos at the same time.

Dearest Shelly, I so wish I were closer but I'm sending the usual gentle and loving hug. BArbara

All this talk about being SCREWED!I will tell you who is being screwed. It is poor unk e, I did not use capital letters because I guess I am just not important....Woe is me!. I causually mentioned the possibility that my piece of "THE BIRTHDAY"cake was probably safely stored in the garage freezer, way in the back somewhere. But no one ever confirmed that that was actually the case....Imagine, how I felt now that I have read the preceeding comments and find that at least one peice of "THE CAKE," made its way over state lines, and currently is residing "safely" in Alice's freezer, headed for Barbara.....Well..Talk about getting screwed, I guess you you see jusy who is the screweee and who are the screwors!!!!!!!!!!!...But do not worry about having deeply offended unk e...I will just sit in the corner in a dark and unheated room and ponder where I went wrong!!!!!!I am certain that it isw all my fault, and that I was deserverdly passed over and scorned for a good reason. I therefore, remain ever contritely and sorrowfully yours, unk e, (formerly known as UNK E, in those bygone days when I was respected and had some worth..)

I am sure I can speak for the entire Waxman family as well as for Barbara in saying that the two elephant cookies and one piece of birthday cake that I have stored in my over-crowded freezer (in freezing NJ) will be evenly divided among everyone who can make Shelly smile. And by the way, and I hope I don't offend anyone, when we did our taste test I think we found the cake, while absolutely magnificent to look at, dryer and denser than the cheap gooey birthday cakes we all grew up with! Love to Unk E and the rest of you.
