What a Weekend

Shelly, whose birthday was on Friday January 29 is a fan of the food channel, and especially enjoys the "Ace of Cakes" so Ellen hatched a plan.

It started on Thursday when Ellen arranged for folks from The Pastry Gourmet on Brown Street in Wickford to come to our house to create a unique birthday cake for Shelly.

Lisa and Donna couldn't have been nicer. They brought everything with them and gave each of us something to do to help in the decoration. They were professional as well as talented and had more patience than one can imagine.

Before they were finished I left to pick up Shelly's sister Debbie at the train station whose birthday was on Saturday, the day after Shelly's.

The next day, Shelly's birthday, Lisa and Donna returned and together we all began assembling the parts of the cake. They deserve an ovation for their kindness to our whole family.

But they saved the best for last. Lisa made a sculpture of Shelly on an elephant like Libby that she rode last June at the Cole Brothers Circus in Newport that you may recall from an earlier blog post.

Later that day a very dear friend and her family came to visit. Jill Bailey and husband Tracy along with their two wonderful boys, Conner and A.J. whom Shelly has known since forever. Also Jill's brother Kenny and their mother, Ann Scherdell whom Shelly has also known since she was in high school.

What a great family and it was such a treat for Shelly and all of us to be able to spend time with these warm and kind friends.

Shelly's close friend Carrie also came down after work in the evening to be with Shelly (and get some of the cake?)

On Saturday Debbie's husband Michael and sons Joshua and Benjamin arrived as well as Judy's cousin Alice, perhaps the most prolific blog commenter of all time. We all worked to finish decorating cookies and eat the birthday cake.

Saturday was Debbie's birthday and this gave everyone a chance to sing Happy Birthday a few more times.

Unk E and Sally sent a beautiful cake made entirely of flowers (that we couldn't eat, for which we are eternally grateful). I think the sugar intake this weekend might set a Guinness World Record.

Everyone is gone now and the house is quiet. We all can use a little rest.

Well, you all did it to me again, another 3 tissue Waxman Blog...Seeing the 3 girls, and mom all together, huggy, tery and emotional....Really Did TAKE THE CAKE!!!!!!!!And what a beautiful cake it was..I guess I do not even have to ask, but I am sure my piece is hidden somewhere safe in the downstairs garage freezer....RIGHT????? And as if all of this wasn't sufficient enough, trust Cecil B D'mellen to top the cake with the Shellyphant...There will have to be a new Academy Award Category for the most caring and creative sister ever put on this earth...and how fortueate we are as relatives to watch her genius continually unfold....Get a good night's sleep Ellen and think and plan really hard for all the many surprises to which you will have to give birth, cause Shelly is gonna be here for a long time to come and I am confident will be waiting for you next extravaganza. Again three cheers to all for another memory and a job well done. Love to You dearest Shelly and to Ellen, and Debbie and too all who helped create and document this cherished memory we can all hold so dearly now...UNK E

Okay, here's one more from Madame Blogger. What an extravaganza is right! It was the most beautiful cake in the world (I got to see it with my own eyes) - only to be topped (pun intended) by the most beautiful elephant - which of course doesn't hold a candle (uh oh) to the beauty of the Waxmans, lead of course by our incredible Shelly. Thank you all for the gift of letting me spend some more time with you. More guests than anyone really needed I know but it was a huge treat for me to be there with the full extended family. I love you all. Alice

OMG
Finally landed within 6 feet of a computer and what a birthday treat I got to share. It was a fantastic work of art obviously appreciated by all in attendance. It made our flourless flower cake look a little puny but ours had no calories!

Shelly
Your calls and caring during my hospital stay really touched a special place in my heart. To hear your sweet voice just makes my day and was especially appreciated while I was all alone.

I'm so grateful to be able to be back at work...limping but present and accounted for!

By the way, I am unable to play the song Lenny wrote for you. Is there something special I need to do to make that happen? Help Harvey!

Love to all the birthday girls and the master party planner and the lucky celebrants
