Update of the Update

A mixed afternoon at the Radiology/Oncology Department this afternoon. We all know that radiation, while it can destroy tumor cells, damages normal cells as well. So, since Shelly is doing so well under chemotherapy alone, the risk/reward ratio doesn't justify intervention, at least not now.

Also, the location of the tumor is such that it is too close to other important structures and radiation might damage them. All in all, no radiation is indicated while she remains as stable with her chemo as she has been and continues to be.

The doctor did make it clear that Stage 4 cancer really never gets cured in the traditional sense. Once it has spread (that's the definition of Stage 4), the threat of more tumor always remains. Although this really wasn't new news it was hard for her to hear.

Still we remain optimistic that her immune system will continue to be strengthened by the nutritional supplement she takes and she will keep this tumor under control.

She stays strong.

Dear Shelly , Your Dad wrote, that the Dr.said that stage 4 does not get cured, in the traditional sense. Well that may be. BUT you are Shelly Waxman, and there is NOTHING, TRADITIONAL! about you. Look at all you accomplished this year! There was nothing traditional about what you have corageously faced and worked through since 2/14/08. when we came to see you last year.Just you keep that chin and your spirits up and show them what an UNTRADITIONAL ONE OF A KIND WAXMAN CAN AND WILL DO!! You go girl...We have you in our thoughts all the time and are with you in spirit even though not in person. Love Unk E
